Hand-painted Carter & Co. tile, c. 1925, executed in an in-glaze technique with a design by Truda Adams of a spray of semi-abstract flowers.

Hand-painted Carter & Co. tile with a bird design by Harold Stabler, from the ‘Water Birds’ series, c. 1937.

Detail of a Carter & Co. catalogue of 1937, showing hand-painted tile designs by Dora N. Batty, Edward Bawden and Harold Stabler. These colourful designs epitomise the best of Carter’s decorative tiles of the inter-war period.

One of the last series of tiles made at Carter’s in the inter-war period was designed by Harold Stabler for the London Underground. In the period 1937–9 he designed relief-moulded tiles for a number of new underground stations such as St John’s Wood. There were eighteen different designs representing such things as the symbols of the Home Counties and famous London locations. They were covered in a single semi-matt cream-white glaze and usually have a little S at the bottom of the designs, which stands for Stabler. They were used as decorative insets among plain tiles of the same colour.
